Honor and Shame in Filipino Culture
There is an admirable practice in Filipino culture that requires protecting anyone subjected to shame whether in a private or public setting. The Filipino cultural instinct is to immediately speak positively about a person subjected to a shaming comment (even if they have to stretch the truth). To shame another is offensive but to use a harmless prevarication to protect them is honorable. The U.S. needs this value to become engrained in their cultural life.
Shame is a powerful tool for keeping people, if you will, under your thumb.
It is notable that God covered Adam and Eve's nakedness (their shame).
However, when shame no longer functions and its purpose is exploited as a brazen resistance to reality the world comes undone.
In a sense, our fear and discomfort of shame can save us from exposing ourselves to its power - a power God does not use.
A person without shame is a hollow soul capable of damaging the world.
It is not wise to resort to shaming another person for any reason. It is godlike to cover their nakedness and love them.
